We invited Aditi Umesh, for an interview with Most Popular Stories to know more about her entrepreneurial journey. Let’s take a look at her story.
- Tell us a little about yourself and your journey as an entrepreneur?
I was brought up in Bangalore, & did my schooling in Bishop Cottons Girls School, which has given me immense exposure to many opportunities and has lead me to the path of being a successful entrepreneur.
Ongoing ahead and doing my degree from the Prestigious Institute of M S Ramaiah institute of technology, as I excelled in studies, I also had an inclination towards being one of the youngest achievers. I have also completed my course in EPPM, i.e, Project Management which is now very necessary all the field of work.
During my college days, I was an all-rounder in studies and cultural activities, the business model of coming out with an innovative technology that uses the waste products to be made useful to construction material was my priority.
Represented the school in an international non-governmental organization, Child Awareness Movement Association (CMCA), and also its members.
Due to immense pollution caused by the building material elements, and the amount of carbon dioxide generated by them that adversely affected the environment, it made me come out with an innovative product in the field of green technology that was AAC BLOCKS.
This new technology uses the fly ash that has been generated by the thermal power plants during the production of electricity and recycles this waste ash powder into a building construction material known as AAC Blocks.
I graduated from college, successfully established my first company under the name of BRICO INDUSTRIES which is into the manufacturing of AAC (Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) blocks under the trademark name of BRICO lite.
With the success of my first firm, I started the second named CONCREW ( of which AMAZON is a Client), in a span of 3 months period which is into construction.
- Why did you choose entrepreneurship over a job?
My Mentor Ananth Ravi ( Ex-Vice President of Reliance Industries), once told that an Entrepreneur is one who scarifies his everyday temporary things in order to satisfy other people’s everyday needs.
Brought up in a middle-class family, parents both being Doctors, having their own establishment, They wanted me to follow the legacy of Doctors or be a Bureaucrat but I wanted to become an industrialist, especially in the field of Civil Engineering which is Male dominated domain.
I chose Civil Engineering and is passionate about the environment, wanted to make such a product that is eco friendly and could be helpful in the field of engineering, where people can rely on easy, economical and speedy construction.
Hence came out with the concept of AAC Blocks and later a second firm named CONCREW, which helps people in using green technology to build smart green homes.
- What was the vision behind?
The only vision I had was to see myself on the magazine cover of Forbes as one of the youngest female business tycoons in the field of Civil Engineering and be an inspiration to many young females in order to do what they dream of and provide employment to thousands of people.
- Describe the services that you offer to your customers and in what way they are unique?
BRICO INDUSTRIES, manufactures Autoclave Aerated Concrete Blocks (AAC) by re-cycling fly ash, under the registered brand name of BRICOlite. To date, BRICOlite has recycled 1567 tonnes of fly ash and drastically reduced the emission of carbon dioxide.
My second firm, CONCREW, not with the intention of making money but to provide a different kind of construction experience by using on environmentally friendly products, which has started off successfully, as they use only green products.
And this firm has AMAZON as its biggest client currently which is an achievement as of today in spite of being a newbie, and bagging the biggest client order, because of its unique construction materials used.
- What difficulties did you face or facing still?
Due to immense pollution caused by the building material elements, and the amount of carbon dioxide generated by them that adversely affected the environment, it made me come out with an innovative product in the field of green technology that was AAC BLOCKS.
This new technology uses the fly ash that has been generated by the thermal power plants during the production of electricity and recycles this waste ash powder into a building construction material known as AAC Blocks.
The struggle behind the formation of BRICO INDUSTRIES is real as being a young woman in a male-dominated Civil Industry had to create a breakthrough in order to establish a brand name and thrive in the Civil Industry.
With no background in the industry, as both of my parents being doctors, I chose the path which I wanted to walk by wanting to make a difference to society. As typical parents, they wanted me to get a secure job but I chose the path less walked or rather we can say the road not taken, and Kiran Mazumdar Shaw being my role model.
Being a woman entrepreneur is easy but in a male-dominated field is preposterous. From dealing with dejections to making them my strengths I had to become one of the strong pillars in the field of Civil.
- How did you handle the pressure and manage stress?
When you do what you love the pressure and the stress are not felt. As an entrepreneur, pain is a part of the journey that has to experienced and enjoyed and suffering is only once choice.
The first stress in particular, that occurred was when the first employee was hired for the firm, it was absolutely chaotic! Sleepless nights. And that on being independent to now heading two companies with a workforce of 46 people, of an average age of 24 has been a beautiful journey as you get to learn so much from these people. All 46 different personalities.
- What is one strategy that you believe, has helped you grow as a person/ startup?
With zero background from the family and on being the first girl child to be educated in my family line, I started off one of the smartest moves I made was to test out the acceptance of the product in the industries. By knowing its flaws and its acceptance and to know about everything about the product, It took off after six months of trading and by taking a sick industry and developing it into the full-fledged factory.
- How is your company helping India grow?
Though BRICO INDUSTRIES is not much helping India as a financial contribution, it helps in to deal with the environmental crisis that it is facing. To date, BRICO lite has recycled 1567 tonnes of fly ash and drastically reduced the emission of carbon dioxide.
And the second firm, CONCREW as it deals with only environmentally friendly construction materials, is making a green revolution in the Construction Industry.
- In your opinion what are the keys to success?
As I am still being too young to define success, I am still awaiting on learning a lot on this beautiful journey, the only motto I live with is “Do what you Love success always follows you. Don’t run behind success.”
- What advice would you give someone starting out as an aspiring entrepreneur?
There is no age to be an entrepreneur. There is no too old or no too young. All you have to believe in the dream you dreamt off and do whatever it takes to make it happen. Believing in yourself when everybody thinks what we dream of is a fairy tale is the most important thing. This is what exactly I believe in.
